Spalding Foundation Namesake, Former Mod Racer Rod Spalding Passes

Longtime Southern Tier race fans were saddened to hear of the death of Rod Spalding, a former modified driver whose injury led to the formation of the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers. Rod passed away at his home on Friday, August 7, 2015 at the age of 68.

Rod, a resident of Troy, Pennsylvania, competed in Shangri-la Speedway’s ultra-competitive Modified division in the 1980s in his trademark green number 11. He reached victory lane on two occasions between 1987 and 1988. He was also the winner of many special awards during his career, including the 1988 “Sportsmanship Award” at Shangri-la. An accident in 1988 at Rougement, North Carolina Speedway left Rod severely injured, prompting Betty Sherwood and countless volunteers to organize a fundraiser to benefit Rod at Quinlan Park in Waverly, where fans raised an astounding $25,000. The following year Sherwood formed the Spalding Foundation, named in Rod’s honor, which continues to financially aid drivers, officials, and crew members injured in racing-related accidents.

Rod was still a frequent spectator at local tracks up until earlier this season, always making the rounds of the pits to get close to the cars and visit with today’s racers.

As per Rod’s wishes, memorial contributions may be made to the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers, Inc., 1074 Sulpher Springs Road, Owego, NY 13827.
